THE TEAM NEWS

SOUTH AFRICA

Captain: Faf du Plessis

  • South Africa head into this T20 series full of confidence after they completed a whitewash over Sri Lanka in the ODI series and will be looking to carry that form into the game’s shortest format.

  • The Proteas have won their last three T20 series' but their last defeat came against their opponents here when Sri Lanka won a single-match series in 2018 whilst they are unbeaten in their last two on home soil.

  • South Africa have named two separate squads for the series with the likes of Faf du Plessis, Quinton de Kock and Kagiso Rabada all set to make way after the first game to give some fringe players some match time.

SRI LANKA

Captain: Lasith Malinga

  • Sri Lanka have a big job on their hands to turn around their heavy defeat in the ODI series after South Africa whitewashed them 5-0 with the Lions struggling for any sort of form as they were comprehensively beaten.

  • The tourists have lost their last two T20 series’ with single-match defeats against England and New Zealand whilst their last win in a three-match series came against Australia back in 2017.

  • After their terrible performances in the ODI series, head coach Chandika Hathurusingha has been summoned to return to Sri Lanka to explain the team’s poor form with fielding coach Steve Rixon taking over as acting head coach.

THE PREDICTION

South Africa dominated the ODI series against Sri Lanka with an impressive 5-0 whitewash and will be looking to continue where they left off as they begin a three-match T20 series. The Proteas were impressive in the 50-over format and will be looking to put on a show in these 20-over games. With South Africa set to rotate their squad after the first game, some of their key men will be given a rest which could spell trouble for Sri Lanka in this opening match as they look to put in a big performance and they can do just that with the tourists once again struggling.
