THE TEAM NEWS

SOUTH AFRICA

Captain: Faf du Plessis

  • South Africa will be buoyed by their comfortable victory in the second ODI, as they bowled Pakistan out for just 203 and they were able to knock those off with the occasional alarm to defeat the tourists by five wickets with eight overs remaining and level up the series.
  • Andile Phehlukwayo scored a career best 69 not out alongside Rassie van der Dussen, whose 80 not out built on the 93 he scored in his one-day international debut in the first match, so expect both young players to be high on confidence going into the third ODI.
  • Dale Steyn and Quinton de Kock are back in the South African squad after being rested for the first two ODIs, while left-arm seamer Beuran Hendricks has been called up for his ODI debut, as Duanne Olivier, Dane Paterson and Heinrich Klaasen all drop out and the inclusion of De Kock especially is huge for them.

PAKISTAN

Captain: Sarfraz Ahmed

  • Pakistan will be encouraged by their performance in the second ODI defeat, with 18-year-old pace bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi showing yet more promise by taking 3 wickets in his first 15 balls, while Hasan Ali scored an impressive half-century that rescued Pakistan from 112 for 8, and both will be hoping to build on this form in third ODI.
  • Captain Sarfraz Ahmed will be under intense scrutiny after broadcasters picked up an allegedly racist comment that he made while Phehlukwayo was batting during the second match, so expect a hot reception from the home crowd if the ICC clear the wicket-keeper to play in the third ODI.
  • If Pakistan are to return to the level of performance shown in the first ODI, they will need more from Imam-ul-Haq and Mohammed Hafeez, who both disappointed with the bat after scoring half-centuries in the first match, and any changes to the selection are likely to be in the batting department.

THE PREDICTION

After Pakistan’s impressive victory in the first ODI, South Africa appear to be back on track with victory in Durban. The hosts’ victory would have been even more comfortable had it not been for a quick-fire half-century from Hasan Ali, and although their top order wilted worryingly under Pakistan pressure, their strength in depth shone through in the end. Andile Phehlukwayo’s career-best stats with both the bat and ball at just the right time will provide great encouragement to Faf du Plessis, who will also have a fresh Dale Steyn to call upon on a faster wicket as well as Quinton de Kock, so they have to be favoured here once again.
