THE TEAM NEWS

TORONTO WOLFPACK

  • Toronto sealed their historic spot in Super League with victory over Featherstone in last season's Championship Grand Final and will now mix it with the elite as they open their campaign against Castleford.
  • The Wolfpack made the biggest signing in Super League history during the off-season with the capture of dual-code star Sonny Bill Williams but Toronto did not add many other names to their roster with them opting to stick largely with the side that won them promotion.
  • Toronto also have a very small squad with just 23 players and will need some luck with injuries during the season or they could find themselves in danger of an immediate return to the Championship.

21-man squad: Ackers, Cunningham, Dixon, Kay, Leutele, Lussick, McCrone, Mellor, Miloudi, Mullally, O’Brien, Olbison, Russell, Sidlow, Singleton, Springer, Thompson, Wallace, Wheeler, Wilkin, Williams

Unavailable:

Questionable: Sonny Bill Williams (Injured), Bodene Thompson (Injured), Darcy Lussick (Injured)

CASTLEFORD TIGERS

  • Castleford were nilled in their play-off defeat to Salford in what was a very disappointing way to end their season in 2019 and they will be keen to put that sour note behind them immediately in their opening match.
  • The Tigers have made a couple of intriguing signings for this campaign and although new winger Sosaia Feki will be unavailable due to injury, fellow new recruits Tyla Hepi, George Griffin, Danny Richardson and Derrell Olpherts are all included in the 21-man squad.
  • Castleford already have a lengthy injury list heading into round 1 but they have still named a strong squad and will hope that the influential pair of Liam Watts and Junior Moors can take to the pitch with the pair still carrying knocks.

21-man squad: Blair, Clare, Eden, Griffin, Hepi, Martin, Massey, Mata’utia, McShane, Millington, Milner, Moors, Olpherts, O’Neill, Peachey, Rankin, Richardson, Shenton, Smith, Trueman, Watts

Unavailable: Sosaia Feki (Injured), Oliver Holmes (Injured), Mike McMeeken (Injured), Jesse Sene-Lefao (Injured), Alex Foster (Injured), Matt Cook (Injured)

Questionable: Liam Watts (Injured), Junior Moors (Injured)

THE PREDICTION

Toronto kick-start their maiden Super League campaign with a game against Castleford at Leeds' Headingley Stadium. The Wolfpack will be the first transatlantic outfit to compete in the top division but face one of last season’s play-off teams in a tricky first encounter. However, Castleford have several injuries to contend with that that could allow the Wolfpack to make an impression in their first game with the aid of a +5.5 start on the handicap.
