THE TEAM NEWS

QUETTA GLADIATORS

Coach: Moin Khan

Captain: Sarfraz Ahmed

  • Quetta Gladiators come into this final determined to win their first ever PSL title after finishing as runners-up in the 2016 and 2017 editions, and they will be high on confidence coming into this after beating their opponents Peshawar Zalmi three times already in this year’s tournament.

  • They typically prefer batting second and chasing which is how they beat Peshawar Zalmi in the two group stage matches but the win in the Qualifier on Wednesday will have given them a boost having hit 186/6 batting first and then restricting Peshawar to 176/7.

  • They will hope to name an unchanged team for this final but they will have to check on the condition of Pakistani-born Australian leg-spinner Fawad Ahmed who had to undergo emergency dental surgery after being hit in the face by Imam-ul-Haq’s straight drive in that game, but it appears their key spinner will be available to play.

PESHAWAR ZALMI

Coach: Mohammad Akram

Captain: Darren Sammy

  • Peshawar Zalmi destroyed Islamabad United in the final Eliminator by 48 runs to reach the final where they face the Gladiators who have inflicted three of their four defeats in this year’s tournament so they will have to raise their games if they are to beat them at the fourth time of asking.

  • Sohaib Maqsood could find his position under threat after another poor display with the bat so veteran Misbah-ul-Haq could be the one to come into the side for him, but that is likely to be the only change to the team for this one.

  • Chris Jordan came into the side for compatriot Liam Dawson against Islamabad United and took 3/26 so they will surely continue with their all-pace attack unless they make a tactical decision to add a spinner back into the mix.

THE PREDICTION

This year's PSL final has all the hallmarks to be a classic in Karachi with the top two teams from the group stage facing off against each other and there is little doubt that they have been the best two teams in this year’s edition of the tournament. The Gladiators have had the luxury of a couple of days to rest ahead of this game and they can also take confidence from the fact that they have beaten Peshawar Zalmi in all three meetings this year. Peshawar will have to be at their best to overcome that and that will mean their bowling attack – arguably the best in the tournament – will have to be at their best and take early wickets. The Gladiators have a psychological edge over them right now and they have to be favoured to win their first-ever PSL crown.
