THE TEAM NEWS

ISLAMABAD UNITED

Coach: Dean Jones

Captain: Mohammad Sami

  • The defending champions from Islamabad got their PSL2019 campaign off to a winning start in their opening match against Lahore Qalandars as they rallied from a difficult position of 118/5 with 5.2 overs remaining but Asif Ali and Faheem Ashraf hit 59 to win with four balls remaining.

  • The strength and depth of the batting line-up is particularly strong as shown in that opening match and they still had Shadab Khan and Samit Patel to come so that will continue to be a major strength for them and they still had room for improvement.

  • Cameron Delport provided two good overs conceding just 12 runs and taking one wicket, and he will likely see more opportunities with the ball ahead of Hussain Talat who conceded 20 from one over, while Phil Salt should get another chance with the bat, although he does need a performance here.

MULTAN SULTANS

Coach: Johan Botha

Captain: Shoaib Malik

  • Multan Sultans got off to a losing start on Friday as they succumbed to the Karachi Kings by seven runs in a narrow defeat as Shoaib Malik looked like he was going to lead them to victory but they ultimately lost several late wickets and fell short.

  • They will be looking for a much-improved bowling display with the likes of Junaid Khan and Mohammad Ilyas both going for 10 and 11 runs per over respectively, and they have to take early wickets after being on the receiving end of an opening stand of 157 – a record partnership in the PSL – in that game.

  • The top order continues to look light without the injured Steve Smith, the absent Joe Denly and James Vince, along with Nicholas Pooran, so they desperately need their core batsmen like Laurie Evans and Shoaib Malik to anchor them until some of their key overseas players return.

THE PREDICTION

Multan Sultans narrowly lost in their first match but it was a valiant effort despite missing so many key batsmen. They may struggle in the first few matches of this tournament until they do recoup some batsmen and they will hope James Vince will be available soon after the Sydney Sixers lost in the Big Bash semi-finals. Until then, they are relying heavily on three or four key players to produce the goods but they do not have the strength and depth of the defending champions. Islamabad won their opener and could follow that up with another victory against the Sultans here.
