The battle to finish second in the Premier League has intensified over the past few weeks as Manchester United and Liverpool have both taken turns at being the best of the rest in the English top flight. This weekend could well give us an indication as to who does finish as runners-up this season, with the two clubs facing off at Old Trafford.
Jose Mourinho’s United side took back second on Monday night after a dramatic win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. It was a result that knocked Liverpool back down to third and it gives the Red Devils a slight advantage going into Saturday’s titanic clash.
This is more a case of do not lose than opposed to must win and with the last four meetings between these two sides ending in a draw, do not be surprised if it turns out being honours even at full-time.
Nine years ago this week, the two sides met at Old Trafford in a Premier League encounter that blew the title race wide open. Cristiano Ronaldo may well have given Manchester United an early lead but from there on in it was all Liverpool. Rafael Benitez’s side went on to score four unanswered goals which silenced the stunned home fans. The Merseyside men would have a day to remember but it was certainly one to forget for Sir Alex Ferguson and his players.
