LAST MEETING
Pakistan won by an innings and 16 runs

THE TEAM NEWS

PAKISTAN

Captain: Sarfraz Ahmed

  • In the second Test of this three-match series, Pakistan beat New Zealand by an innings and 16 runs to level the series with the help of Yasir Shah’s brilliant 14-184, which were the second-best match figures by a Pakistan bowler, to leave this series finely poised.
  • Both Babar Azam and Haris Sohail scored centuries as Pakistan set an imposing target for the Kiwis and the batsmen were backed-up well by the bowlers, in particular Shah, as the leg-spinner picked up a remarkable eight wickets in one innings, and they will likely follow that blueprint here of batting cautiously to build a big total and tire the Kiwis out.
  • Pakistan could be without talented pace bowler Mohammad Abbas after he picked up a shoulder injury in the second Test, so his injury might pave the way for a debut for Shaheen Afridi, the young left-arm fast bowler who has burst into the national side with impressive results this season, if Abbas fails a fitness test.

NEW ZEALAND

Captain: Kane Williamson

  • New Zealand’s innings defeat to Pakistan in the second Test of their three-game series came after a nail-biting four-run win in their first encounter thanks to five second-innings wickets from debutant Ajaz Patel, and they will look to get back on track after the disappointing display last time out.
  • Despite the Black Caps’ collapse in their first innings in the second test, there were signs of a fightback in their second innings, with Tom Latham, Ross Taylor and Henry Nicholls all scoring half-centuries, but Yasir Shah’s excellence was too much for them.
  • All-rounder Colin de Grandhomme will be hoping to have more of an impact in the third Test having scored just 17 runs in four innings and taking just four wickets in three innings, and his place could well be under threat after struggling to come to terms with conditions and Pakistan’s bowling attack.

THE PREDICTION

This series is finely poised with one win each coming into this deciding test in Abu Dhabi. The tourists will have to come to terms with Yasir Shah’s leg spin if they want to succeed but they do have the batsmen to do so if they can maintain their concentration and bat for long spells. That was the key for Pakistan in the second Test and they patiently built a big first innings total. They have the bit between their teeth right now and Yasir Shah especially looks to be the decisive player in the series so far with little sign of New Zealand being able to hold him out for long enough. Shah could just about spin it into Pakistan’s favour once again.
