LAST MEETING
New Zealand beat Sri Lanka by 21 runs

THE TEAM NEWS

NEW ZEALAND

Captain: Kane Williamson

  • New Zealand sealed the victory with a second consecutive win against Sri Lanka in Mount Maunganui but they only really had themselves to blame for the fact it was closer than it should have been as they dropped six catches on the way to a 21-run victory.
  • The second ODI followed a similar pattern to the first match where the Blackcaps batted first and posted a big total, and the tourists fell narrowly short in chasing that down and their batsmen continue to be in good form though this time it was Taylor, Munro and Neesham again who produced the fireworks
  • With the series sealed ahead of this final match, there is every chance that they will rotate their bowlers for this game so expect to see Lockie Ferguson and Doug Bracewell both come back into the line-up for this final game.

SRI LANKA

Captain: Lasith Malinga

  • Sri Lanka have competed better than many expected in both one-day internationals so far to prove they can compete with a team like New Zealand in conditions which typically do not favour them but they have still lost both matches so far as they play this final game for pride now.
  • They will take this final match seriously to salvage some pride so there is every chance that they name an unchanged team for this match as they look to build on the last match where they came within 21 runs of the home side’s total.
  • In both matches so far, they have had one batsman that has produced a superb innings but he has not had the support needed to lead them to success unlike the hosts so that has to be one of the aims for more of their batsmen to contribute.

THE PREDICTION

It has been little surprise that New Zealand have wrapped this series up after the opening two matches but Sri Lanka have competed surprisingly well in both matches. They will not be disheartened by those two defeats and they will hope to be able to bat first if possible and try test the Blackcaps in chasing. That said, the last game would have been a much more comprehensive defeat had the hosts taken just a couple of their six dropped catches and there remains a fair gulf in quality and consistency in their batting. Although they may ease off the gas a little, the hosts have to be favoured once again.
