THE TEAM NEWS

NEW ZEALAND

Captain: Kane Williamson

  • New Zealand have now lost the first two ODIs to India with the latest coming on Saturday when they fell 90 runs short chasing India’s 324/4 and they are going to have make significant improvements if they are to compete and avoid a series defeat after just three ODIs.
  • All of their top six batsmen made starts in the second ODI but failed to convert it into a big score and Williamson was critical of their shot selection and their rash stroke play as they failed to deal with the pressure that India applied to them.
  • Doug Bracewell should keep his place after topscoring in their innings and Sodhi should after his good bowling display so any rotations are likely to involve Southee and Santner coming back in but it is difficult to see what they can change in their batting line-up other than their mentality.

INDIA

Captain: Virat Kohli

  • India are enjoying some great form right now and they come into this third ODI keen to grab a third win in a row and seal the series in emphatic fashion before New Zealand can find any form and come back at them.
  • The Indian Cricket Board have announced that Hardik Pandya will be available for selection for this game after his recent disciplinary issues so they may see this as an opportunity to bring him straight in either here or in the fourth ODI if the series is wrapped up.
  • There is little reason however for any changes to what have been two outstanding all-round performances so far so there is every chance they are unchanged and then they will rotate for the final two ODIs if they are afforded that luxury as the form of their batsmen and bowlers is superb at present.

THE PREDICTION

New Zealand have struggled to compete with India in these first two one-day internationals and they will have to seriously up their game if they are to challenge them and prevent them from sealing the series in this third match. India’s batsmen and bowling attack have the edge over their counterparts and unless any of the Blackcaps’ batsmen can really click into gear and find some form, then this looks like a formality for the tourists once again.
