All-time meetings: Kings XI Punjab W8, Kolkata Knight Riders W16 Last meeting: Kolkata Knight Riders beat Kings XI Punjab by 28 runs
THE TEAM NEWS
KINGS XI PUNJAB
Coach: Mike Hesson
Captain: Ravi Ashwin
Kings XI Punjab come into their penultimate match of the group stage knowing their only chance now of reaching the top four is to win their final two matches starting with this clash against Kolkata Knight Riders where the loser will be eliminated.
Similar to last season when they made a strong start and faded badly, Kings XI Punjab have lost five of their six matches and their bowling especially has suffered as they have conceded 200+ in their last two matches.
They return home after three matches on the road and they will hope the home support will spur them on while they will likely make one or two changes to their bowling attack as Mujeeb Ur Rahman could make way after conceding 66 from his four overs last time out and Sam Curran or Hardus Viljoen should come in.
KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS
Coach: Jacques Kallis
Captain: Dinesh Karthik
Kolkata Knight Riders snapped their six-match losing streak last time out by beating Mumbai Indians by 34 runs, and they know they too have to win their final two matches to have any chance of reaching fourth place now.
The opening partnership has been an issue for them all tournament but Shubman Gill was promoted to partner Chris Lynn and the move paid dividends against Mumbai so he will likely continue in that role with Sunil Narine batting further down the order.
Sandeep Warrier came in for his first match of IPL 2019 and bowled well conceding just 29 in his four overs and he may have done enough to keep his place in the side so there is every chance that they name an unchanged team for this crunch match.
This match really is a make or break game for both of these teams as they sit in identical positions and they really need to win both of their remaining matches to have any chance of reaching the fourth and final knockout round spot. The form of both teams has been miserable in the second half of the season but at least KKR come into this match with a victory in their last match. KKR’s firepower with the bat just about gives them the edge against a Kings XI bowling unit that has conceded over 200 in their last two matches.
