All-time meetings: Sunrisers Hyderabad W2, Chennai Super Kings W6

THE TEAM NEWS

SUNRISERS HYDERABAD

Coach: Tom Moody

Captain: Kane Williamson

  • Sunrisers Hyderabad dropped their most recent match to a fired up KKR who were desperate for victory to qualify for the play-offs as Hyderabad posted a total of 172 which was chased down by KKR with two balls to spare.

  • The Sunrisers batting form has shifted recently with Hyderabad averaging 187 in their last four matches although there is still a reliance on skipper Kane Williamson (661) and Shikhar Dhawan (437) at the top of the order and combined they have scored 49% of Hyderabad’s total runs scored for the tournament.

  • Carlos Brathwaite came in for his first match against KKR at the expense of Alex Hales. The inclusion of Brathwaite adds to the already impressive bowling unit and adds some middle/lower order hitting so it will be interesting to see what combination Moody chooses for this match.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

Coach: Stephen Fleming

Captain: MS Dhoni

  • Chennai comfortably accounted for the Kings XI in their last match of the group stage comfortably chasing the Kings XI sub-par total of 153 as Suresh Raina was the star with the bat scoring 61 from 48 deliveries.

  • Lungi Ngidi was selected over David Willey to lead the bowling attack and he certainly justified his selection by taking a career best 4/10. The most impressive part of this display was the manner in which he was able to dismiss both Chris Gayle and K.L Rahul, setting up the victory for his team.

  • Shane Watson should come back into the side after being rested and this means it is likely to see Faf du Plessis miss out. Sam Billings did not grasp his chance and was dismissed first ball so his spot is definitely under pressure also.

THE PREDICTION

The two best performing teams face off in a match that will see the winner progress straight to the grand final on Sunday while the loser will play the winner of KKR vs Rajasthan. It is easy to make a case for both sides who have been ultra-impressive throughout the tournament to date with Chennai’s big hitting top order rising to the occasion more often than not with Shane Watson, Ambati Rayudu and MS Dhoni leading the way whilst Lungi Ngidi has been an important inclusion to a bowling order that has been seen to lack some fire power. For Hyderabad it has largely been their bowling unit consisting of Rashid Khan, Siddarth Kaul and Shakib Al Hasan dominating and saving Hyderabad from some very low total defences but in recent times their batting order has caught fire. Both teams have had some patchy form coming into this match however the fact both teams had qualified some time ago means they can be forgiven. As for this match, Chennai have now beaten Hyderabad twice this year and go into this match full of confidence while Hyderabad have dropped their past three matches in poor fashion. The inclusion of Ngidi is huge for CSK and with a fast wicket expected, expect him to cause some headaches for Dhawan and Williamson and help Chennai through to the big dance.
