THE TEAM NEWS

KOLKATA KNIGHT RIDERS

Coach: Jacques Kallis

Captain: Dinesh Karthik

  • Kolkata were stunned by the Mumbai Indians in a match many expected they should have won with relative ease. Kolkata struggled with the ball, allowing Mumbai to score a very healthy 181 and then Kolkata struggled to change gears and ended up falling well short of the total.
  • It was the Kolkata bowlers who struggled the most in the searing Mumbai heat as the fast bowlers were visibly distressed and Mumbai capitalised to full effect. Kolkata used a seven bowlers, but were only able to take four wickets for the match. Andre Russell was easily the best bowler (2/12) but could not physically bowl more than his two overs.
  • Once again Mitch Johnson went wicketless, and this short turn around may see a change or two after such a gruelling match along with a couple of other possible changes.

MUMBAI INDIANS

Coach: Mahela Jayawardene

Captain: Ajinka Rahane

  • Mumbai have now won three of their last four matches and currently sit just outside the top four places so their morale and confidence is high as they push to make the play-offs and defend their crown.
  • It was a great bowling performance from the entire bowling unit of the Mumbai Indians as they were very disciplined in testing conditions with all bowlers except Ben Cutting going for under ten runs an over. Hardik Pandya and Mayank Markande now sit first and second on the total wickets taken list and have largely contributed to Mumbai’s turn of form.
  • There is no stand out Mumbai player that deserves to miss out on the return match against KKR, so expect them to keep the same eleven and keep some stability which is something they have missed all year.

THE PREDICTION

With Bangalore losing to Hyderabad, this match is all of a sudden extremely crucial for both teams’ finals hopes. Kolkata are desperate to keep their place in the top four whilst Mumbai lurk just a game behind and have been in fantastic form. It is a real credit to the Mumbai Indians who never looked like making a dent in the competition early on but have turned their season around in amazing fashion. The Kolkata outfit have been patchy all year but do possess the talent to wreak havoc against their opposition whilst Mumbai have finally found some squad stability, a reflection on their turnaround in form. Although the KKR squad looks to be the superior one, you cannot expect anything in this tournament and Mumbai have a genuine chance to knock off KKR for the second time in two days and continue the historic dominance they have against Kolkata. As for a result, this game could go either way so whoever can handle the pressure the best will take the points in what will be a pivotal result for the remainder of the tournament but Mumbai get the edge due to momentum.
