HEAD-TO-HEAD All-time meetings: Kings XI Punjab W6 Rajasthan W9

THE TEAM NEWS

KINGS XI PUNJAB

Coach: Brad Hodge

Captain: Ravichandran Ashwin

  • The Kings XI are coming off a shock loss to the Mumbai Indians as Mumbai restricted them to 174 and whilst some thought that total would be enough against the lowly Mumbai, they were proved wrong as the score was chased down for the loss of just four wickets.
  • The opening partnership of Gayle and KL Rahul is one of the most damaging in the league and they have opened together on five occasions and have scored at least fifty as a partnership each time. Given such dominance, it is the middle order of the Kings XI that need to take advantage of the strong platform given by the two openers. In the match against Mumbai, only the newly recalled Marcus Stoinis (29) and Karun Nair (23) were able to score over twenty.
  • The Kings XI have had a reasonably settled line-up all year and although they have hit a bump in the road, they would be reluctant to make significant changes.

RAJASTHAN ROYALS

Coach: Paddy Upton

Captain: Ajinkya Rahane

  • Rajasthan have now lost two matches in a row with their most recent against Delhi in a rain affected match in which they were unable to chase a revised total of 151 from 14 overs falling four runs short.
  • The combination of the freshly recalled D’Arcy Short and Jos Buttler at the top of the order worked a treat for Rajasthan with the two overseas imports combining for an opening stand of 82 runs. Both players have been in poor form as of late and whilst they lost, both of their performances should give them some confidence.
  • Ben Stokes continues to struggle whilst Ish Sodhi was a surprise omission for the Delhi match. If Sodhi is to return there will need to be a shuffling of bowlers to accommodate the spinner into the team.

THE PREDICTION

Rajasthan have now lost two in a row and things are looking grim and of all the teams stranded on three wins, the Royals’ case for making the finals seems the hardest to answer. The Kings XI will also be disappointed with their last few outings, after such a promising start to the tournament they have now lost two of the last three matches and will be looking to bounce back in a big way. Rajasthan will have some serious worries over the opening partnership of Gayle and Rahul and will need to quell their influence and get into the slightly weak middle order if they are any chance of defeating the Kings XI. This match could be closer than anticipated if Rajasthan can get the early jump and if the weather intervenes, however the Kings XI should be too strong for the struggling outfit.
