THE TEAM NEWS

KINGS XI PUNJAB

Coach: Brad Hodge

Captain: Ravichandran Ashwin

  • Kings XI’s last match was a low scoring affair against Sunrisers Hyderabad as they produced a fine bowling display to hold the Sunrisers to 132 but as has happened so often during this tournament, SRH well and truly choked the Kings XI into submission and were eventually bowled out for just 119.
  • Ankit Rajpoot bowled one of the best spells of IPL 2018 so far as the 24 year old fast-bowler took an amazing 5/14 from his four overs claiming the scalps of Kane Williamson, Shikhar Dahwan, Wriddhiman Saha, Manish Pandey and Mohammad Nabi. Rajpoot has easily cemented his spot in the starting eleven now after not featuring in the King XI’s first four matches.
  • It was a poor batting display from the Kings XI, Aaron Finch once again did not feature in the runs and may face the axe after a poor tournament by his high standards so players such as David Miller and Marcus Stoinis have only played two matches between them and could be given a reprieve.

MUMBAI INDIANS

Coach: Mahela Jayawardene

Captain: Rohit Sharma

  • Unfortunately for Mumbai it was another loss after such a fine display against Chennai as the depth of the RCB batting order was too great as they conceded 167 from their twenty overs and in reply, Mumbai could only stutter their way to 153.
  • Hardik Pandya came into this tournament with huge expectations and for the most part has been underwhelming. Against Bangalore however, Hardik showed what he is capable of in the field running out Brendon McCullum in the 15th over and then returning to the bowling crease in the 17th over taking three important wickets. Pandya then backed up his bowling effort with 50 from 42 balls and was the only batsman to show any fight against RCB.
  • In a somewhat bizarre selection, Kieron Pollard was recalled to the side against RCB. The selection did not pay off with Pollard once again not bowling and once again failing with the bat. Evin Lewis’ form had been patchy, however he has still scored 194 runs from seven matches and was seemingly dropped for Pollard against RCB. This could have been for team balance, but in any case it was a strange move to change the XI in such a way after such a dominant performance against Chennai so it is anyone’s guess what team Mumbai put out against the Kings XI.

THE PREDICTION

After a rich vein of form the Kings XI hit a bump in the road against Hyderabad whilst Mumbai failed to back up their previous heroics, falling to the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Mumbai have failed to settle on a starting XI which has impacted their performances throughout the year and some of their selection decisions like the one which saw Pollard recalled last time out have been questionable to say the least. The Kings XI have a chance to further validate their credentials with a dominant display and should get the job done against the struggling Mumbai Indians.
