What was the outcome in the last meeting? Edmonton Oilers 3 – 2 Vancouver Canucks

  • The Canucks ended the 2018-19 regular season on a two-game losing streak and finished quite far from the playoffs, as they closed their campaign in 12th place in the Western Conference with 81 points.
  • C Elias Pettersson was Vancouver’s top performer last season after notching 66 points (28 goals, 38 assists). C Bo Horvat (27 goals, 34 assists) and RW Brock Boeser (26 goals, 30 assists) also chipped in on the offensive end. D Alexander Edler had 24 assists as a solid attacking presence from the blue line.
  • The Canucks’ biggest move in the free agent market was signing LW Micheal Ferland (17 goals, 23 assists with the Carolina Hurricanes last season) to a four-year contract. They also added D Tyler Myers (nine goals, 22 assists with the Winnipeg Jets in 2018-19) on a five-year deal and D Jordie Benn (22 points in 2018-19 with the Montreal Canadiens) on a two-year pact.

  • Just like their opponents Vancouver, Edmonton Oilers also finished quite far from the playoffs and were the second-worst team in the Western Conference with 79 points, topping only the Los Angeles Kings (71 points) and losing four of their last five games. They also had the second-worst defence in the West after allowing 274 goals.
  • Despite the Oilers’ struggles, they had two players who surpassed the 100-point mark during the 2018-19 season. These were superstar center Connor McDavid (41 goals, 75 assists) and C Leon Draisaitl (50 goals, 55 assists). D Darnell Nurse played all 82 games in the regular season and contributed 31 assists as a blue-liner.
  • The Oilers were not very active in the free agent market but they re-signed RW Alex Chiasson (22 goals, 16 assists) and also handed one-year deals to players such as G Mike Smith, LW Markus Granlund and RW Josh Archibald.

Both the Canucks and the Oilers seem to be amid rebuilding processes, and there isn’t a lot separating either franchise from each other. However, the Oilers will open the season at home and that could be decisive here in what will likely be a tightly-contested affair with probably just the one goal deciding it.
