What was the outcome in the last meeting? Carolina Hurricanes 2 – 1 Montreal Canadiens

  • The Hurricanes reached the playoffs during the 2018-19 season after finishing seventh in the Eastern Conference with a 99-point haul, highlighted by the fact that they ended the campaign on a three-game winning run and notched wins in four of their last five games. They made it to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they got swept aside in four games by the Boston Bruins.
  • C Sebastian Aho was one of the team’s top performers last season after finishing with 83 points (30 goals, 53 assists), while LW Teuvo Teravainen impressed with 55 assists on route to 76 points and RW Justin Williams had 53 points (23 goals, 30 assists).
  • Carolina’s biggest move in the free agent market was the re-signing of 21-year-old center Aho to a five-year deal worth $8.45M AAV. They also signed LW Ryan Dzingel on a two-year deal and re-signed G Petr Mrazek but they lost LW Micheal Ferland to the Vancouver Canucks.

  • One of the most historic franchises in the league, the Canadiens fell just shy of the playoffs last season as they finished ninth in the Eastern Conference with 96 points, two behind the eight-placed Columbus Blue Jackets.
  • C Max Domi was Montreal’s top performer during the 2018-19 season after leading the squad with 72 points (28 goals, 44 assists). The top scoring threat was RW Brendan Gallagher who notched 33 goals en route to a 52-point season, while LW Tomas Tatar had 25 goals and 33 assists.
  • Montreal re-signed Artturi Lekhonen and Joel Armia during the free agent market, but they also acquired defenseman Ben Chiarot, who was with the Winnipeg Jets last season on a three-year contract.

The Hurricanes impressed last season by reaching the Eastern Conference Finals and they managed to maintain most of their core pieces heading into the 2019-2020 campaign. They therefore seem poised to open the new season with a solid win by at least 1.5 goals over a Montreal side in transition.
