What was the outcome in the last meeting? Arizona Coyotes 6 – 1 Anaheim Ducks

  • The Arizona Coyotes were quite close to making the playoffs last season, but they stumbled down the stretch going 2-3 in their last five games. As a result, the Coyotes ended the regular season in ninth place of the Western Conference with 86 points, four adrift a playoff berth.

  • Not one Arizona player finished the season with 50 points or more, with the most productive player on the squad Clayton Keller achieving 47 points (14 goals, 33 assists), while defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson was one of the most productive players on his position thanks to 14 goals and 30 assists. Alex Galchenyuk and Brad Richardson were the top scorers on the roster with 19 goals each, although Galchenyuk has since joined Pittsburgh.

  • The Coyotes re-signed Lawson Crouse to a three-year contract and also re-signed Dysin Mayo, Hudson Fasching and Michael Bunting. They also added Andy Miele, Aaron Ness and Beau Bennett as free agents, but lost several players on the open market such as Mario Kempe (Kings), Richard Panik (Capitals), Calvin Pickard (Red Wings) and Josh Archibald (Oilers).

  • The Anaheim Ducks ended the regular season on a strong note with three straight wins and four in the last five. However, that wasn’t enough to mask their poor overall campaign as Anaheim ended the regular season in 13th place of the Western Conference with 80 points, only topping the Oilers (79 pts) and the Kings (71 pts).

  • The Ducks struggled on offense, with no player reaching the 50-point mark. However, four finished with at least 40 points, as Ryan Getzlaf paced the squad with 48 (14 goals, 34 assists), while forwards Rickard Rakell and top-scorer Jakob Silfverberg tallied 43.
  • The Ducks handed out mostly one-year contracts in free agency, where the names of defensemen Jani Hakanpaa and Michael Del Zotto stand out, and they also signed goalkeeper Anthony Stolarz to a two-year deal.

There isn’t much separating the Coyotes from the Ducks in the first round of the season, but Arizona were the better of the two franchises last season. Expect them to secure the win once again, despite playing on the road, although this game should be a tight affair.
