Hull FC vs Salford Red Devils Preview

The Lowdown

HULL FC

  • Hull begin their Super 8s campaign on a high after they produced a brilliant second half display to comprehensively beat Leeds Rhinos last week to book their place in the Challenge Cup Final.
  • Lee Radford's side picked up a few knocks in their semi-final with Marc Sneyd, Mark Minichiello and Josh Bowden all missing from last week. Steve Michaels returns from injury along with Jansin Turgut and Jordan Thompson.
  • Hull have won five of their last six home Super League matches and come up against a side they have beaten seven times out of the last eight home league games, with that one defeat coming earlier in the season.

Head Coach: Lee Radford

Squad: Jake Connor, Gareth Ellis, Brad Fash, Mahe Fonua, Chris Green, Josh Griffin, Danny Houghton, Albert Kelly, Masi Matongo, Sika Manu, Steve Michaels, Jamie Shaul, Fetuli Talanoa, Scott Taylor, Jordan Thompson, Carlos Tuimavave, Jansin Turgut, Danny Washbrook, Liam Watts

Unavailable: Marc Sneyd (Ankle), Mark Minichiello (Ankle), Josh Bowden (Knee), Jack Downs

SALFORD RED DEVILS

  • Salford will be looking for an immediate response to their Challenge Cup exit at the hands of Wigan last weekend as they attempt to retain their spot in the top four.
  • If last week's loss wasn't bad enough, Ian Watson has lost several key players with Mark Flanagan and Lama Tasi ruled out for the season. Michael Dobson and Junior Sa'u also picked up knocks in last week's game so they too miss out.
  • Salford are stuck in a rut at the moment, having lost six of their last seven Super League games. Another loss here for the Red Devils could see them drop out of the top four and leave them needing to make up ground on teams that have been chasing them for most of the season.

Head Coach: Ian Watson

Squad: Jake Bibby, Todd Carney, Niall Evalds, George Griffin, Weller Hauraki, Greg Johnson, Josh Jones, Olsi Krasniqi, Rob Lui, Tyrone McCarthy, Ben Murdoch-Masila, Dan Murray, Gareth O'Brien, Logan Tomkins, Manu Vatuvei, Adam Walne, Kris Welham, Josh Wood

Unavailable: Lama Tasi (Suspended), Mark Flanagan (Shoulder), Lee Mossop (Injured), Kriss Brining (Injured), Michael Dobson (Injured), Junior Sa'u (Injured), Ryan Lannon, Jordan Walne

Analysis - what to expect
Despite the fact that this is the first game of the Super 8s for these two teams, it could be a pivotal game and shape the season for both. They come into the game in hugely different moods after Hull progressed to the Challenge Cup final, with Salford falling short in their quest last weekend. The black and whites produced one of the performances of the season last weekend and if they can replicate that against an out-of-sorts Salford outfit, they will improve their home record as well as their home record against the Red Devils. However, perhaps more importantly, they will open up a three-point gap on their opposition in the battle for a top four place.
