THE LOWDOWN

Al Boum Photo will look to make history by matching Best Mate’s efforts in making it three consecutive Gold Cup wins at the Festival. He looks set to go off favourite in the showpiece event and the 9-year-old will have plenty of backers in his efforts to get the job done. Nicky Henderson’s Champ could be one of the biggest challengers with last year’s RSA winner likely to go close. He comes into this on the back of a second place over a much shorter trip at Newbury as he made his return from a wind op and he will certainly be a lot sharper following that run. Another interesting contender here is 2018 winner Native River who will aim to become just the second horse to regain the title. His jumping to claim a Grade 2 success at Sandown last time out brings him into the Festival in fine fettle and if he can replicate that effort here, he will go close at a big price.

THE PREDICTION

Native River would be a hugely popular winner of the 2021 Gold Cup but Al Boum Photo making history would top that. Willie Mullins has enjoyed a strong week so far and he will be hoping to cap it off with the major prize alongside jockey Paul Townend. The pair have successfully guided Al Boum Photo to back-to-back wins in this race and the fact he has been so lightly raced should leave him with plenty in the tank to put his name alongside the great Best Mate.
