THE PLAYERS

KAREN KHACHANOV

  • Khachanov has steadily grown into the tournament and delivered his best performance in the third round when he defeated potential banana skin Martin Klizan in straight sets.
  • This will be the third consecutive year that Khachanov has reached the fourth round in Paris but he has never progressed beyond this stage in any major so uncharted territory beckons for him if he can navigate his way past the experienced Del Potro.
  • The Russian has only taken one set off Del Potro in their previous three meetings but all of those matches were played on hard courts so the clay should offer a fresh perspective on this particular match-up.

JUAN MARTIN DEL POTRO

  • Del Potro's most straightforward match of the tournament came in the third round when he outclassed Jordan Thompson 6-4, 6-4, 6-0 and that will serve him in good stead here after he endured two tough rounds to begin with.
  • The Argentine's biggest obstacle is often his own body but although he appeared to twist his knee in his second-round encounter with Yoshihito Nishioka, he has shown no signs of that plaguing him since.
  • Del Potro equalled his career best in Paris last year when he reached the semi-finals where it took the King of Clay Rafael Nadal to stop him in his tracks.

THE PREDICTION

It is often a question of whether Del Potro's body holds up at this stage of a Grand Slam but so far he has looked largely uninhibited and that can only spell bad news for Khachanov. The Russian is playing some of his best tennis of the year at the moment and is growing in confidence by the round, but Del Potro should prove too big a task for him, as has been the case in all three previous meetings between the two.
