THE PLAYERS

JOHANNA KONTA

  • Johanna Konta may well have played the best match of her career against last year’s runner-up Sloane Stephens to win in straight sets for the fourth time at this tournament.
  • In doing so, Konta became the first British woman to reach the semi-finals of Roland-Garros since Jo Durie 36 years ago and the British number one has already reached a final this year in Rome.
  • This is now the third Grand Slam that Konta has managed to reach the last four after doing so at the 2016 Australian Open and Wimbledon a year later and she looks to be back to her very best form after some injury struggles last year.

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA

  • Young Czech Republic star Marketa Vondrousova is yet to drop a set in this year’s Roland-Garros and has knocked out three seeded players on her way to the semi-finals.
  • The 19-year-old reached the round of 16 at last year’s US Open but this is by far her best showing at a Grand Slam and she beat Roland-Garros’ reigning champion Simona Halep at her previous tournament, the Italian Open.
  • In fact, Vondrousova’s Italian Open was ended at the quarter-final stage by her semi-final opponent here Johanna Konta, with the pair sharing a 1-1 head-to-head record coming into this clash.

THE PREDICTION

At 19 years old, Marketa Vondrousova has already troubled the top-end of the women’s game and will be rocketing up the rankings table no matter the result here. Her 1-1 record with Jo Konta is not to be sniffed at, although her win over the British number one was last year in Konta’s bad patch of form. However, the Czech beat Simona Halep on clay last month and that cannot be ignored. This match could go down to the wire, but Johanna Konta’s performance against Sloane Stephens was just too dominant to ignore.
