THE PLAYERS

ASHLEIGH BARTY

  • Eighth-seed Ashleigh Barty fell behind to American teenager Amanda Anisimova but did what no player has done this tournament by taking a set off the 17-year-old before claiming the decider.
  • Barty will face another unseeded teenager in the Czech Republic’s Marketa Vondrousova in the Roland-Garros final, the Australian’s first Grand Slam final at the age of 23.
  • Barty has played Vondrousova twice before and won on both occasions, most recently on a hard court in Cincinnati last year and before that on grass in 2017.

MARKETA VONDROUSOVA

  • Marketa Vondrousova broke British hearts by taking out Johanna Konta in the semi-final of Roland-Garros on Friday morning, her fourth seeded opponent defeated in a row.
  • The Czech teenager has not dropped a set all tournament and, while she has been threatening to challenge the top order this year, nobody would have predicted a place in the French Open final.
  • At 19 years old, Vondrousova’s star is rising, and she is due to shoot up the WTA rankings table no matter the outcome here after consistently out-performing players above her current rank of 38 all season.

THE PREDICTION

Marketa Vondrousova’s win over British number one Johanna Konta was an almost instant revenge for her exit in Rome last month to Konta in the round of 16, where the Czech had displayed her credentials with a third-round win over Simona Halep. Halep’s conqueror in this tournament, Amanda Anisimova, looked unstoppable, but Ashleigh Barty has quietly made her way through six opponents and a set down to the American teenager to be in this final and may well be the favourite. Her 2-0 head-to-head record over Vondrousova attests to this, as does her big-match experience, but neither player has played a Grand Slam final and they have never met on clay. As 19-year-old Vondrousova improves with age, and seems to favour the clay court, previous meetings between these two could be taken out of context. Looking at their performances at Roland-Garros, it looks likely that the final could go to three sets, with Vondrousova favoured here.
