THE LOWDOWN

RAFAEL NADAL

  • In what appeared to be a formality from the beginning, Nadal swept aside Richard Gasquet in straight sets in the third round to continue his seemingly unstoppable march towards an 11th French Open title.
  • The Spaniard will of course go into this round as a heavy favourite but has stated that Marterer - whom he has never previously faced on tour - will be a "a dangerous opponent".
  • Nadal has yet to drop a set in his first three rounds, and as has been the case in previous years when he has won the title at Roland-Garros, his level has improved with each game.

MAXIMILIAN MARTERER

  • Marterer has enjoyed a breakthrough year on the tour having reached the third round of the Australian Open and now the fourth round of the French.
  • The 22-year-old has picked up some impressive wins on route to this clash with Rafa, deafeating Ryan Harrison, Denis Shapovalov and Jurgen Zopp for the loss of just one set.
  • The German made just 11 unforced errors in his third round defeat of Zopp, and he will need every ounce of that consistency if he is to be competitive in this meeting with the defending champion.

THE STATISTICS

THE PREDICTION

Two lefties take to the Philippe Chatrier stage on Monday but that is where the similarities end as this is uncharted territory for German youngster Marterer, whilst Nadal is of course a mainstay at this stage of the competition.

Marterer showed plenty of potential in the first week at Roland-Garros and could well be a star of the future, but he still has a long way to go to reach the top and here he comes up against a man who is simply on another level to the rest of the field. The King of Clay is likely to continue his progress without dropping a set.
