THE LOWDOWN

MARIN CILIC

  • In his most impressive display of this year's tournament, third seed Cilic made light work of Steve Johnson in the third round, coming through 6-3, 6-2, 6-4.
  • The Croat has been talking up his chances at Roland-Garros this year and appears to be full of confidence, but this meeting with Fognini will be his toughest test to date.
  • Although not his favoured surface, Cilic has improved his results on clay in recent years and is now seeking to reach thr quarter-finals in Paris for a second concescutive year.

FABIO FOGNINI

  • Fognini outlasted British hope Kyle Edmund in a thrilling third round encounter, coming from two sets to one behind to reach the fourth round for the first time since 2011.
  • As is always the case with the enigmatic Italian, he has been brilliant at times but also erratic, and it is this inconsistency which has prevented him from reaching the very top of the game.
  • Fognini beat Cilic on clay in their first ever meeting in 2009. Cilic then took the next two matches - one of them also on clay - but the pair have not been drawn together since 2011.

THE STATISTICS

THE PREDICTION

This is a very difficult match to call as Fognini certainly has the capability to win this match. His shot making ability is up there with some of the best in the game and he will certainly cause Cilic problems, but the real question is whether he can sustain the level required to beat Cilic over the long format. The key factor here could be how switched on Cilic's serve is; Fognini is a great returner on clay but he will struggle to deal with the Croat's biggest weapon if it is firing on all cylinders.

The more consistent Cilic is just favoured to come through in four or possibly five sets.
