THE LOWDOWN

JEREMY CHARDY

  • Chardy has had some mixed results in the clay court season, suffering some early exits but also reaching the semi-finals of the Istanbul Open.
  • The Frenchman has twice reached the fourth round at the French Open - firstly in 2008 when he lost to Nicolas Almagro and then in 2015 when he fell in four sets to Andy Murray.
  • He has not managed to get the better of Berdych in five previous meetings but they have only once met on clay - a closely fought three-set affair back in 2009.

TOMAS BERDYCH

  • Berdych's career appears to be slowing down somewhat but he remains a top player as shown by his run to the quarter-finals at this year's Australian Open.
  • The world number 20 has endured a torrid clay court season however, losing in the first rounds of the Monte-Carlo, Madrid and Rome Masters.
  • At Roland-Garros he has reached the semi-finals once and the quarter-finals twice so that should at least give him belief that he can reach the second week.

THE STATISTICS

THE PREDICTION

This is a tough match to call as Berdych is capable of playing at a higher level than Chardy but this is not something he has shown on the clay this year as the Czech player has struggled for form on the surface. Chardy will have the home crowd behind him which should give him a boost, but this is a match-up he has struggled with in the past so this match is likely go the same way as the previous five.

Berdych is favoured to come through this in four sets.
