FIVE KEY FACTORS

  • With Mercedes the winners of the opening four races, the F1 circus arrives in Europe. Before the start of the season, few pundits would have predicted such dominance for Mercedes, but following Azerbaijan the question everyone is asking is whether Mercedes are that good, or if Ferrari are that bad.
  • The Circuit de Catalunya is a track well known by the drivers, who all use it massively during winter testing, with those that do well in this race often successful for the rest of the season. All the teams will bring new parts and updates, with Redbull looking at improving cornering and Ferrari seeking downforce gains.
  • The Spanish Grand Prix is the track where Ferrari impressed so much during winter testing but, while they arguably have the fastest car, they have only secured two podiums so far this season and the pressure is mounting to finally deliver.
  • Can the fabled Italian team produce the race pace they keep promising on Friday and Saturday practice sessions? The Scuderia simply cannot match Mercedes on the track when it matters, with Mercedes operationally and strategically far superior. If the Silver Arrows dominate in Spain, then the season could well be lost for Ferrari.
  • Valtteri Bottas has really raised his game this season and is taking the fight to Lewis Hamilton, and the title could easily now be between the two Mercedes drivers.

THE PREDICTION

On paper, Ferrari should win in Spain, having impressed so much here in winter testing, but Mercedes have led with such dominance and have made a record-breaking start to the season.

Ferrari do not have the best track-record in the developmental race, and Spain signals the frantic battle for new parts and performance gains, where Mercedes excels.

In terms of prediction, it is hard to escape that Lewis Hamilton won the 2018 Spanish Grand Prix in convincing fashion. Given Mercedes’ operational excellence, better strategic calls, new updates and the fact they are probably sandbagging in the practice sessions and talking themselves down, it seems most likely to be yet another day in the sun in Spain for Lewis Hamilton.
