Celtic would have hoped to be involved in a UEFA Champions League play-off round match this week but their disappointing exit against Ferencvaros in the second qualifying round last month put paid to that and they must now focus on trying to earn a spot in the group stage of the Europa League. The visitors have won four matches in a row since that aforementioned defeat and so at least have some positive momentum heading into this fixture, but Neil Lennon’s team have conceded the first goal in each of their last two games and they can’t afford a sluggish start against a Riga team which has been in excellent form domestically with 17 wins from 19 matches. The hosts earned a notable 1-0 victory against Copenhagen in Europa League qualifying last season – the fact that the Danish team went on to reach the quarter-finals and defeated Celtic en-route puts that result into perspective and shows what a tricky tie this might be. The Scottish champions are tipped to successfully come through the challenge but it could be a close encounter with just one goal separating the two teams.
