THE TEAM NEWS
- Pachuca sit in 11th place in the Apertura standings with 22 points (W6, D4, L7) but they should be confident ahead of this match-up. They need a miracle to reach the playoffs – to win here plus losses from both Tijuana and Monterrey – and their recent form isn’t overly inspiring – they have gone W1, D1, L3 in their last five games, although they are undefeated in the last two. They played out a 0-0 draw at Tigres UANL last time out.
- Pachuca’s depth in defence could be tested since Victor Mora and Emmanuel Garcia Vaca have both been ruled out, although neither played a big role within the team this season. One huge absence will be that of Franco Jara, as the team’s leading scorer has been ruled out for this pivotal contest due to a suspension.
Expected starting XI: Rodrigo Rey; Raul Lopez Gomez, Jaine Barreiro, Oscar Murillo, Erick Aguirre; Jorge Daniel Hernández, Rubens Sanbueza; Jonathan Copete, Victor Guzmán, Romario Ibarra; Victor Dávila
- Pumas (23 points – W6, D5, L6) remain alive on the race for a playoff berth and their scenario is quite simple – they need to win, while Monterrey and Club Tijuana can either draw / lose their respective matches to sneak into the postseason. Their recent form hasn’t been very good, though, as they have won just once in their last five games (W1, D2, L2), but they have not lost any of the last three. They are coming off a 1-1 home draw against Juarez last time out.
- Star striker Carlos Gonzalez and centre-back Nicolas Freire are both doubtful ahead of this match, although the defender is quite unlikely to feature given recent reports. Martin Rodriguez and Jeison Angulo won’t feature here, as the coaching staff already confirmed both players won’t be playing for Pumas UNAM anymore.
Expected starting XI: Alfredo Saldívar; Alan Mozo Rodríguez, Nicolás Freire (Luis Quintana), Pablo Jáquez, Alan Mendoza; Kevin Escamilla, Andrés Iniestra, Víctor Malcorra, Bryan Mendoza; Carlos González (Felipe Mora), Juan Iturbe
Pumas UNAM and Pachuca basically need the same thing to happen if they want to reach the playoffs – whoever gets the win here will have a shot depending on what happens with Monterrey and Tijuana, while the loser will go home and a draw doesn’t suit either team. As such, this should be a very open contest where we might have a decent amount of goals. Pachuca struggle at home (W3, L5) and Pumas have poor form on the road (W1, D3, L4) so neither side seem to have a clear edge over the other. Expect this to end in a draw.
