THE TEAM NEWS

NECAXA

  • Necaxa qualified for the playoffs after ending the regular season in fifth place with nine wins out of 18 matches and 31 points. They are coming off a 3-0 away loss at Puebla, however, and won just two games out of their last five. They also lost their most recent home game 2-1 against Pachuca.
  • Necaxa could be missing an important player in defence, as Ventura Alvarado suffered an injury against Puebla and could miss out on the first leg of this tie. If he is forced to be out, then Alexis Pena or Ricardo Chavez could replace him in the starting lineup.

Expected starting XI: Hugo Alfonso González; Ricardo Chávez, Fernando Meza, Rodrigo Noya, Cristián Calderón; Luis Felipe Gallegos, Claudio Baeza, Jesús Angulo, Kevin Mercado; Mauro Quiroga, Maximiliano Salas

QUERETARO

  • Gallos Blancos ended the regular season in fourth place of the standings, as they finished with the same record and points as Necaxa, but with a superior goal differential (+12 against Necaxa’s +10). Queretaro are coming off a 3-1 home win over Monarcas the last time out, and that win ended their three-game winless skid.
  • Jaime Gomez and Alexis Perez have both been listed as injured ahead of this match, and their availability will be decided closer to kick-off time. There are no further injuries for Gallos Blancos ahead of this contest.

Expected starting XI: Gil Alcalá; George Corral, Jair Pereira, Luis Romo, Jesús Escoboza; Marcel Ruiz, Jordan Sierra, Clifford Aboagye; Jeison Lucumí, Ayron del Valle, Ake Arnaud Loba

THE PREDICTION

Both sides enter this matchup with the same five-game form (W2, D1, L2) and have been similar throughout the season so this matchup could end up being quite cagey. The home/away splits should clear things up, however, as Necaxa struggled at home and enter this match on a four-game winless run at Estadio Aguascalientes (D2, L2) while Queretaro were one of the top teams on the road during the regular season thanks to only three defeats in nine matches. It will be a tight encounter, but Queretaro should have a slight edge on paper.
