THE TEAM NEWS
- Monterrey might have ended the Apertura regular season in eighth place (27 points – W8, D3, L7) and had to wait until the final week of the campaign to secure their playoff spot, but they enter this game on an impressive run of results. Following their 2-0 home win over Atlas, Rayados enter this matchup winning three of their last four games and riding a five-game undefeated streak (W3, D2).
- Leonel Vangioni recovered after missing last week’s match, and he is expected to be available for this since he re-joined the training sessions Tuesday. Rogelio Funes Mori is unlikely to play due to injury, however, and Vincent Janssen would get the start if the former is unavailable.
Expected starting XI: Marcelo Barovero; Stefan Medina, Nicolás Sánchez, César Montes, Leonel Vangioni; Miguel Layún, Celso Ortiz, Jesús Gallardo; Dorlan Pabón; Vincent Janssen, Rodolfo Pizarro
- Los Guerreros ended the Apertura regular season as the top team, sitting in first place with 37 points out of 18 matches (W11, D4, L3) and on an impressive six-game undefeated streak. However, it must be said that Santos were rather pedestrian when playing on the road, as they finished with an even W3, D3, L3 mark and a -6 goal differential on the road. They ended the regular season with a 2-2 draw away at Toluca in a game where they rested several regular first-team players.
- Santos Laguna have their best XI available for this match expecting goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco. The veteran shot-stopper has missed the team’s last three games due to an injury, and chances are he won’t be able to feature here. If that’s the case, then Carlos Acevedo would get another start.
Expected starting XI: Carlos Acevedo; Carlos Orrantía, Hugo Isaac Rodríguez, Doria, Gerardo Arteaga; Fernando Gorriarán (Edgar Games), Ulises Rivas; Erick Castillo, Diego Valdés, Brian Lozano; Julio Furch
Despite Santos Laguna’s road struggles and Monterrey’s impressive form in recent weeks, Los Guerreros should be the favourites here. They had the best attacking line of the entire Apertura – averaging 2.22 goals per game – and only Tigres UANL lost more games than them during the regular season. Rayados will be without a key player in Rogelio Funes Mori, and that should be enough reason to think Santos Laguna will gain the edge on the aggregate score following the first 90 minutes of this tie.
