THE TEAM NEWS

UKRAINE

  • Ukraine come into this international friendly against Estonia with the comfort of knowing they have already qualified for EURO 2020 so they can use this match and their final group game against Serbia as part of their preparations for the final tournament already.
  • Head coach Andriy Shevchenko named a strong squad for these matches but has seen a raft of players withdraw such as Denys Boyko, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Marlos, and Junior Moraes through injury so his options are reduced somewhat for this game.
  • They still have some experienced members of the squad available such as Andriy Pyatov, Yevhen Konoplyanka and Andriy Yarmolenko, but they will certainly use this match to give playing time to some of their younger and fringe players here including Genk’s promising 23-year-old forward Roman Yaremchuk.

ESTONIA

  • It has been an exceptionally difficult EURO 2020 qualifying campaign for Estonia having picked up just one solitary point from their seven matches and conceding 21 goals and they will enjoy the respite from competitive action in this friendly.
  • Head coach Karel Voolaid is without a couple of absentees but does not seem to be using this match as an opportunity to blood youngsters as there remains plenty of senior figures in the squad.
  • Their two main absentees for this match are veteran defender Enar Jääger who has 126 caps for his country, but has had to withdraw through injury, while key defender and captain Ragnar Klavan has been left out for this match also, leaving the defence somewhat weakened.

THE PREDICTION

Both teams are missing some regular first team players for this international friendly, but it is Ukraine who clearly have the greater depth to their squad. Estonia are in disarray right now with little quality or confidence in their ranks and they have struggled against teams with any real quality. Much will depend on how motivated Ukraine are for such a friendly, but with some fringe and younger players keen to impress, one would imagine they should still have too much quality for this poor Estonian team.
