THE TEAM NEWS

MAINZ

  • Mainz fought back from two goals down against Koln last week as they earned a draw in their first game back in Bundesliga action and that point could turn out to be important come the end of the campaign.
  • The visitors looked to be heading for a first loss in three games as they trailed 2-0 at the hour mark but goals from Taiwo Awoniyi and Pierre Malong earned Mainz a point which was well deserved after a solid display.
  • Mainz will come into this tough home contest with no new injury concerns although the game is likely to come too soon for long-term absentee Stefan Bell but the hosts will be boosted by the return of Jean-Philippe Mateta from suspension.

RB LEIPZIG

  • RB Leipzig were made to pay for sloppy finishing as they were held to a draw at home to Frieburg last week but things could have been worse for them as VAR came to their rescue in stoppage time.
  • Freiburg took a shock lead in the first half and it looked as though Leipzig would fail to get back into the game as they wasted numerous great chances in front of goal until Yussuf Poulsen headed in with just 13 minutes remaining.
  • Leipzig were given a big scare when Freiburg thought they had retaken the lead in stoppage time only to see their effort ruled out but the draw was still a big blow to their title hopes and they may have to try and respond without Marcel Sabitzer and Patrik Schick who both need to prove their fitness.

THE PREDICTION

RB Leipzig’s title aspirations suffered a knock as they could only claim a point from their clash with Freiburg. They now head to Mainz as they aim to get back on track but the hosts will be confident of taking something from this contest after earning a solid point on the road at Koln last week. Mainz have lost just one of their last five Bundesliga matches but have only won the same number and with Leipzig hurting from last week, they should be able to respond by picking up the three points and extending their unbeaten run to eight matches in all competitions.
