THE TEAM NEWS

SAO PAULO

  • Sao Paulo are coming off a 0-2 home defeat against Fluminense last time out, and they have suffered two league defeats in their last three matches, failing to score in both games. Things look a bit better when they play at home – even though Thursday’s result ended a four-game winning streak at Morumbí; Sao Paulo have lost just two of their last 10 league home matches (W6, D2, L2).
  • Pablo is available after seeing action against Fluminense and Igor Gomes returns to the squad from a one-game suspension. Everton and Joao Rojas remain injured, however, while Gonzalo Carneiro remains away from the squad due to suspension. All things considered; manager Fernando Diniz is not expected to make too many changes despite the packed schedule for Sao Paulo in the coming weeks.

Expected starting XI: Tiago Volpi; Dani Alves, Bruno Alves, Robert Arboleda, Reinaldo; Tche Tche, Jucilei, Igor Liziero; Hernanes; Alexandre Pato, Vitor Bueno

ATHLETICO PARANAENSE

  • Athletico Paranaense are coming off a 0-0 home draw against Cruzeiro last time out and although they deserved better luck in that match, the result extended their undefeated streak in the Serie A to six games (W3, D3). They are also undefeated in their last six league matches away from home (W2, D4).
  • Manager Eduardo Barros will have several absences ahead of this match. Marco Ruben and Leo Pereira are slated to miss Sunday’s match at Morumbi due to yellow card accumulation, Jonathan and Adriano remains out through injury, while Lucas Helter has been listed as doubtful. Bruno Guimarães and Léo Cittadini picked up knocks earlier this week against Cruzeiro, and have been confirmed as out as well.

Expected starting XI: Santos; Madson, Pedro Henrique, Thiago Heleno, Márcio Azevedo; Wellington, Camacho, Thonny Anderson; Nikão, Rony, Marcelo Cirino

THE PREDICTION

On one hand, Sao Paulo have suffered just two defeats in the last 10 league matches (W6, D2, L2). Meanwhile, Paranaense enter this contest on a good run of form since they have lost just once in their last 10 Serie A matches (W4, D5, L1) while riding a six-game undefeated streak (W3, D3). Both sides are vying for a spot in the 2020 Copa Libertadores and while the hosts are higher up in the standings, the visitors are playing much better of late. The main differential here lies on the team news department, as Paranaense will have two important players suspended (Marco Ruben and Leo Pereira). That should tip the scales in Sao Paulo’s favour in what’s going to be a tight match.
