FPL Gameweek 1 – head-to-head comparisons: Alex McCarthy vs Rui Patricio
Two goalkeepers hoping for a stellar 2020-21 Premier League season are Southampton's Alex McCarthy (£4.5m) and Rui Patricio (£5.5m) of Wolves. McCarthy kept seven clean sheets for the Saints last season, whilst Patricio kept 13 for Wolves. However, what must be taken to account is that McCarthy did not originally start the 2019/20 season as first choice and only played 2520 minutes overall compared to Patricio's 3420.
Both teams face tough away matches in Gameweek One, with Southampton travelling to Crystal Palace and Wolves up against Sheffield Utd. With both games set to be difficult assignments for each keeper, the value of the two keepers should be taken into account here. Priced at £1.0m cheaper than Patricio, McCarthy should be favoured here, with that spare money being invested elsewhere.
Verdict: Alex McCarthy
