With both players first team choices when fit, both Lucas Digne (£6.0m) and Seamus Coleman (£5.5m) are likely to keep a similar number of clean sheets again this season. Therefore, the choice between the two comes down to their attacking potential and namely, whether Digne is worth the £0.5m extra needed to acquire his services. On the face of it, Digne has Coleman beat in all categories and therefore looks the obvious choice. However, it is worth noting that due to Coleman’s injuries last season, Digne racked up just over 400 additional minutes of playing time. In fact their points per appearance are extremely similar, with Digne averaging just 0.20 more than Coleman. It is the hidden stat that pushes the left-back to the forefront of our thinking. Digne is on set piece duty for Everton and therefore, just through shear volume of crosses made, is likely to record more attacking returns than Coleman throughout the course of the year.
Verdict: Lucas Digne
