THE PLAYERS

RICHARD VEENSTRA

  • Number three seed Richard Veenstra averaged 86.31 in his 3-1 victory against World Championship debutant Justin Hood on Tuesday afternoon.
  • The main highlights of Veenstra’s performance against Hood were impressive back-to-back ton-plus checkouts of 127 and 145 in the second set which gave him a crucial two-set lead.
  • The Dutchman has now made it through to the last 16 at the World Championship for five consecutive years, with his only defeats at this stage of the tournament having been against Scott Waites and Danny Noppert.

DAVID EVANS

  • World Championship debutant David Evans came back from 2-1 down to defeat Nick Fullwell in a last-set decider in their round one encounter on Tuesday.
  • Evans’ average of 83.65 was almost five points less than Fullwell’s 88.26 but key checkouts of 107 and 112 from Evans in the final two sets played a big part in the final outcome.
  • This is his first appearance in the last 16 of a major televised ranking tournament since the 2002 World Masters when he lost to eventual runner-up Tony West.

THE PREDICTION

Richard Veenstra came good at the right times in his opening match against Justin Hood and the number three seed will probably be too good for another World Championship debutant in this game. The advantage in experience and quality that Veenstra has over Evans will be evident over this long format and the Dutchman should be able to cover the -1.5 handicap.
