THE PLAYERS

NATHAN ASPINALL

  • Nathan Aspinall is through to the quarter-finals at Alexandra Palace for the second consecutive year following his 4-2 win against two-time PDC world champion Gary Anderson in a hard-fought encounter that saw five of the six sets go to a deciding leg.
  • Aspinall’s impressive power scoring saw him hit 11 180s against Anderson, but in the end, it was his composure in closing out legs that was the crucial difference as he finished the match with a checkout percentage of 40% compared to Anderson’s 32%.
  • This is Aspinall’s fifth appearance in the quarter-finals of a TV tournament – he has won three of the previous four, which includes a 5-1 victory against Brendan Dolan in the last eight at the PDC World Championship 12 months ago.

DIMITRI VAN DEN BERGH

  • Dimitri Van den Bergh defeated two-time PDC World Champion Adrian Lewis in a deciding set to reach the quarter-finals at the PDC World Championship for the second time in the space of three years.
  • The young Belgian trailed 3-1 against Lewis but dug deep to win three consecutive sets for the loss of just three legs to get over the line in a match where both players struggled to find consistency for the most part.
  • Although Van den Bergh reached the final at the 2018 German Darts Masters, a win here would put him through to the semi-finals in a major ranking tournament for the first time. The closest he has come previously was at this tournament two years ago when he lost 5-4 to Rob Cross in an epic quarter-final match; Cross had led 4-1 only for Van den Bergh to level before losing in the deciding set.

THE PREDICTION

Nathan Aspinall has already proved that his run to the semi-finals here last year was no fluke and he further demonstrated his quality by ousting Gary Anderson in the last 16 to go within one step of equalling his achievement from 12 months ago. Dimitri Van den Bergh is no stranger to this stage of the tournament and he is capable of exceptional performances, but his level of consistency is not at the same standard as Aspinall’s and this could be the decisive factor. Aspinall to win 5-3 is the prediction and Aspinall to hit the most 180s is also tipped.
