THE TEAM NEWS

ADELAIDE STRIKERS WOMEN

  • Adelaide Strikers were unable to build on a maiden appearance in the semi-finals as they ended last year’s competition in sixth place on the ladder and will be hoping for a better showing this time around.
  • That appearance in the semi-finals two years ago could be an anomaly with the Strikers finishing no higher than sixth in the three other editions of the Women’s Big Bash League and that could suggest another struggle in this year’s tournament.
  • In Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine, the Strikers have two of the most dangerous players in the entire competition and the Kiwi pair will be key to their team’s chances but they will need support from the likes of West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor who will make a cameo appearance.

MELBOURNE RENEGADES WOMEN

  • After struggling in the first three editions of the Women’s Big Bash League, Melbourne Renegades had a break out season last time around as they progressed to the semi-finals and will hope to build on that.
  • The Renegades already boasted an impressive squad last year but have made some moves to improve their team further with England’s Tammy Beaumont joining the team to make her WBBL debut.
  • One blow for the Renegades is the loss of captain Amy Satterthwaite who is unavailable as she prepares to give birth and although her spot in the side will take some filling, the likes of Danni Wyatt can step up to minimise the impact of Satterthwaite’s absence.

THE PREDICTION

Melbourne Renegades enjoyed their best outing in the WBBL last time out and will look to build on that in this tournament but will need to fill the hole left by captain Amy Satterthwaite if they are to be successful. The Renegades have talent throughout their side and can challenge for the knockout stages once again with this opening game against Adelaide Strikers presenting them with a very good chance of getting off to a strong start.
