THE TEAM NEWS

TRENT ROCKETS MEN

  • Trent Rockets cruised to a nine-wicket win in their opening fixture of the Hundred at Trent Bridge, restricting their opponents Southern Brave to just 126/8 before reaching their victory target with 18 balls still in the bank.
  • Whilst dangerman Alex Hales departed for a first ball duck, his services at the top of the order were not required anyway, as fellow opener D’Arcy Short alongside England T20i Dawid Malan both racked up half-centuries in an unbroken stand of 124 for the second wicket.
  • Afghanistan spin-bowler Rashid Khan surprisingly went wicketless with the ball, as fast bowler Marchant de Lange stole the show with a five-wicket haul.

NORTHERN SUPERCHARGERS MEN

  • Leeds-based Northern Superchargers suffered the indignity of being brutalised by Yorkshire’s Jonny Bairstow on their own ground as they came out the wrong end of a thriller against Welsh Fire, losing by just 5 runs.
  • Another Yorkshire cricketer in Harry Brook, starred for the Superchargers, smashing 62 from 31 balls in a losing effort, despite a late flourish with the bat from both Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts running Welsh Fire close at the death.
  • Ben Stokes captained the side and is likely to continue in that role following the news that South African Faf du Plessis will miss their opening three games due to still suffering symptoms of concussion after being hit in the head during the Pakistan Super League last month, with Lancashire Dane Vilas having been brought in as a replacement.

THE PREDICTION

Northern Superchargers’ top heavy batting line-up failed to make an impact in their opening game after being spun out by Qais Ahmad, which doesn’t bode well for them here against Rashid Khan and Trent Rockets. When assessing these two sides, the batting order of the Rockets does feel a lot stronger in terms of depth and this may prove important against a strong visiting bowling attack. When you compare the form of the Trent Rockets’ batters compared to the Northern Superchargers, combined with the absence of Du Plessis then the home side have to be favoured for two points, although dismissing the likes of Chris Lynn and Ben Stokes early on will be important, with both capable of serious fireworks should they spend an extended period of time at the crease.
