THE TEAM NEWS

OVAL INVINCIBLES MEN

  • Plenty of star players from Surrey will take to the field here on their home ground for Oval Invincibles including England limited overs opener Jason Roy and the explosive Will Jacks alongside both Sam and Tom Curran.
  • After playing a starring role for England in their recent limited overs fixtures against Pakistan, fast bowler Saqib Mahmood is expected to star in the Hundred and will represent Oval Invincibles’ only genuine pace option.
  • Due to issues obtaining a visa, Nepalese spin-bowler Sandeep Lamichhane will be unable to feature in this first match, which may provide an opportunity for Middlesex’s Nathan Sowter to play as Oval Invincible’s front-line spinner.

MANCHESTER ORIGINALS MEN

  • Manchester Originals will be hoping for fireworks from wicketkeeper batter Jos Buttler, with the England superstar expected to open the batting and immediately look to score big in this new format, supported by two other explosive batters in Phil Salt and Joe Clarke.
  • Following his impressive showing on the international stage against Pakistan, leg-spin bowler Matt Parkinson will have a huge part to play as a wicket-taker in the middle period of the opposition’s innings, however overseas star Lockie Ferguson faces a race against time to be fit and the New Zealand fast bowler not being able to play would be a blow.
  • Both Jamie Overton and Richard Gleeson have each been ruled out of the tournament through injury, two further quicker bowling options taken away from the Originals, who have replaced them with Glamorgan’s Dan Douthwaite and Calvin Harrison of Notts.

THE PREDICTION

Both Oval Invincibles and Manchester Originals aren’t likely to be at full strength for the opening match of the Hundred men’s competition, however, both sides are packed with quality on the batting front in particular. A high scoring game may well be in prospect with Jason Roy, Sam Billings and Will Jacks going up against Jos Buttler, Joe Clarke and West Indian all-rounder and T20 World Cup hero Carlos Braithwaite. Whilst the spin-options for the home side are limited without Lamichhane, Manchester Originals face arguably bigger problems within their bowling attack, having lost Overton, Gleeson and potentially Ferguson as well. The absence of Ferguson especially would be a seismic one and whilst Parkinson is capable of taking wickets, he may also go for big runs in the process on a good batting pitch. Keep an eye out for the starting line-ups before making any moves, but ultimately the experience of this Oval Invincibles side and particularly its core of Surrey players on their own ground should lead them to victory in this inaugural men’s contest.
