THE TEAM NEWS

LONDON SPIRIT WOMEN

  • London Spirit made hard work of chasing 129 to beat Birmingham Phoenix in their first game, they made it through with four balls to spare as Danielle Gibson came in at number nine to hit two boundaries from her two deliveries faced to see the Spirit home.
  • England T20i bowler Freya Davies certainly showed promise with the ball in the match, dismissing Phoenix and Indian international Shafali Verma relatively early on and bowling at an economy rate of less than a run a ball.
  • London Spirit’s batting will be hugely boosted by the return of England star Tammy Beaumont for this match after she was announced as a late absentee for the game vs the Phoenix due to a wedding.

OVAL INVINCIBLES WOMEN

  • Oval Invincibles became the inaugural winners of a Hundred fixture after chasing down 136 to defeat Manchester Originals with only two balls remaining infront of a raucous Kia Oval crowd on opening night.
  • South African duo Marizanne Kapp and Dane van Niekirk are clearly set to be hugely important players for the Invincibles in this tournament and both played a huge role in seeing their side home here, with the latter striking the winning runs to finish 56 not out.
  • After taking some tap with the ball, England T20i regular Mady Villiers played a vital cameo late on with the bat and the Essex star will be hoping for more chances to wield the willow as the competition goes on, whilst left-arm fast bowler Tash Farrant will be looking to build on her three wickets accumulated vs the Originals.

THE PREDICTION

With both of these sides coming into this local derby following victories, an exciting clash looks in store. London Spirit will need to draw up a plan of action to counter both Kapp and van Niekirk, although their bowling attack will be confident of breaking through the Invincibles top order batting, with their most recent top three of Georgia Adams, Alice Capsey and Grace Gibbs all inexperienced on such a big stage. The return of Beaumont ultimately may prove a crucial factor for Heather Knight’s charges, with a vastly improved batting performance expected by the Spirit compared to this past Friday and this should ultimately drive them to victory.
