All-time meetings: Sussex W14, Essex W11

  • Despite sitting top of the Southern group, Sussex have failed to win their last two Vitality Blast matches, after a defeat away at Surrey was followed up by an abandoned game away at Canterbury against Kent Spitfires.
  • With Rashid Khan’s stint as overseas player ending, the Sharks have replaced him with Australian left-arm seamer Jason Behrendorff, who is set to makes his debut against the Eagles here.
  • Right-arm fast bowler and former Essex player Tymal Mills will not feature in this game due to injury and he will miss out for the remainder of the campaign now, whilst another ex-Eagle Reece Topley remains a doubt as Sussex continue to manage his workload on a game-by-game basis.

  • The last time Essex Eagles got onto the field in a Vitality Blast game, they were on the end of a 114-run hammering at home to Somerset and since then they have had three successive games have been abandoned due to rain, two of them without a ball bowled.
  • Overseas player Mohammed Amir has signed up to play the rest of the group stages for Eagles and will line up against the Sharks which is a boost as the Pakistan left-arm fast bowler has only featured in three completed matches so far due to a combination of visa issues and the inclement weather.
  • Both Jamie Porter and Sam Cook played for Essex in their recent County Championship match against Kent and both bowlers could feature in this game alongside Amir, however T20 specialist Cameron Delport has been named in the squad and comes back into the fold.

Sussex will be looking to bounce back after a surprise loss against Surrey was preceded by last Friday’s washout at Kent and a match against Essex Eagles at Hove provides them with a great platform to do just that. Essex have failed to win their last five T20 matches, albeit three of them have been completely rained off. Realistically they have to win all their remaining games if they want to stand any hope of knockout qualification.

In Jason Behrendorff, Sussex have replaced one world class overseas player with another and this match provides the perfect platform for the Aussie to debut his skills to the Sharks faithful. Better with bat, ball and the field, Sussex Sharks should comfortably win this game and establish their position at the top of the Southern Group.
