THE TEAM NEWS
PAARL ROCKS
- Paarl Rocks essentially finished third in the inaugural Mzansi Super League and they will be keen to go a step further and challenge for honours this time around and they have South African star Faf du Plessis leading them once again.
- After missing the entire 2018 MSL campaign, JP Duminy joins the Rocks from Cape Town Blitz and he will look to continue his impressive form in this format of the game in 2019 while he is joined by Tabriaz Shamsi and Dwaine Pretorius to form a strong local core to the side.
- They will have to do without the injured Aiden Markram and the unavailable David Willey, but they will be able to count on James Vince once his England duty in New Zealand has finished while Hardus Viljoen and Cameron Delport add some serious strength to this team.
CAPE TOWN BLITZ
- Cape Town Blitz got their MSL 2019 campaign off to a tremendous start on Friday as they gained some revenge against the team that beat them in last year’s final in Jozi Stars, and the 15-run victory was largely thanks to an excellent batting display as they totalled 213/3 when batting first.
- Janneman Malan hit an unbeaten 99 from just 59 balls but he was frustrated not to reach his century after missing the last ball of the innings by Dan Christian, though ultimately he laid the foundations for the victory and the other four batsmen that came to the crease all chipped in with valuable knocks to demonstrate their batting firepower.
- On what was a pitch that heavily favoured the batsmen, Dale Steyn showed his quality taking 4/25 from his four overs and the fact they had seven players bowl demonstrates their strength and depth which will be key once again in this game as they could name an unchanged side.
THE PREDICTION
Cape Town Blitz lived up their name in the opening match against Jozi Stars as their batsmen blitzed the Stars’ bowlers in impressive fashion and put a marker down for the rest of the tournament. Quinton de Kock’s men looked impressive with the bat, yet the bowling unit of Steyn, Philander, Nortje and Moeen Ali will win some games for them in MSL 2019. Paarl Rocks come into their opening game with plenty of star power themselves but they will have to hit the ground running. In what promises to be another high-scoring match, it is difficult to look past this Blitz team and their all-round quality.
