What was the outcome in the last meeting? Jozi Stars beat Nelson Mandela Bay Giants by 81 runs

  • Nelson Mandela Bay Giants narrowly missed out on the knockout phase last year and they were not helped by the fact that they had two matches that were abandoned which was more than any other team.
  • The Bay Giants have retained most of their key players from the inaugural MSL as JJ Smuts will lead the team once again and he will be supported by experienced T20 talents like Heino Kuhn, Jason Roy, Chris Morris and Imran Tahir.
  • They have also made a couple of shrewd signings which will add more quality to the side as Farhaan Behardien joins from Cape Town Blitz while they have also snapped up left-arm paceman Beuran Hendricks from Jozi Stars and the duo could well prove to be key additions for them.

  • Defending champions Jozi Stars came unstuck in their opening match against Cape Town Blitz as after conceding 213/3 when they put their opponents into bat, they fell 15 runs short despite making a good fist of the run chase.
  • The bowling attack is arguably one of the best in the tournament but it struggled on the batting paradise in Johannesburg and last season’s top wicket-taker Duanne Olivier was especially poor conceding 32 from his two overs.
  • They are unlikely to make any kneejerk reactions to that initial loss and there is every chance they name an unchanged side for this match on the bay as Temba Bavuma will be desperate to get his first win as Stars’ captain under his belt.

Jozi Stars lost their opening match in a shootout with Cape Town Blitz in the first match of MSL 2019 but they will be confident of bouncing back here. Nelson Mandela Bay Giants feature in their first game of the campaign with plenty of hope after strengthening their squad, but this will be a tough opening assignment against the defending champions. The Stars’ batting power is as formidable as any in the tournament and unless Imran Tahir can make inroads into their top order as he has an excellent record against Chris Gayle, then the Stars should have too much all-round quality in this one.
