THE TEAM NEWS

NEW ZEALAND

  • New Zealand made it five successive T20i wins in a row by defeating England to reach the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup final, chasing down 165 with an over to spare after a crucial knock of 72 not out by Daryl Mitchell alongside a brilliant cameo from middle-order hitter Jimmy Neesham, who blasted 27 from 11 balls.
  • The Black Caps will go into the final without batter and wicketkeeper Devon Conway, who broke his hand after proceeding to punch his bat immediately following his dismissal against England, so the likelihood is the Tim Seifert will be brought into the side as wicketkeeper.

AUSTRALIA

  • Australia shocked the previous unbeaten Pakistan in their semi-final, reaching their victory target of 177 with one over and five wickets remaining following a stunning display of hitting from middle order batters Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade, after opener David Warner had set the tone with his 49.
  • With no injuries to report, captain Aaron Finch is expected to name the same starting XI for this final as they aim to secure their first ever ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title.

THE PREDICTION

One of these two nations are about to break their duck in this tournament, lifting the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup for the very first time. Both sides enter this final in excellent form after winning their respective semi-finals against the odds. The toss is expected to be absolutely crucial here, with the winning captain expected to bowl first as was the case in the two semi-finals. Chasing a target has always been the preferred option of teams across the competition as opposed to batting first, with the potential dew factor always taken into account. However, the key to this match is likely to be the batting strength-in-depth of the two teams. Conway’s injury is a huge blow to New Zealand, who have lost a top-class batter and will need to adjust their line-up as appropriate. Australia however, contain quality with the willow right down to the bowlers, as Number 6 and Number 7 batters Stoinis and Wade proved in the semi-finals. This may well be the difference between these two neighbouring countries and with that in mind, back Australia to go on and win this final.
