THE TEAM NEWS

ENGLAND

  • England come into this fourth Test level in the series after Ben Stokes’ heroics at Headingley in the third Test saw them miraculously win from what seemed to be an impossible situation and this Ashes series has a completely different complex to it now.
  • They have been closely monitoring the fitness of Jimmy Anderson but the pace bowler has suffered a recurrence of his calf injury and has been ruled out so Somerset’s Craig Overton has been called into the squad but all the signs point towards an unchanged team for this match.
  • There remain issues with the batting line-up however so they will make a change to the batting order here with Joe Denly moving up to open the innings with Rory Burns which will see Jason Roy move down to number four in the hope that Roy can find some form once the shine has been taken off the new ball.

AUSTRALIA

  • Australia were shell shocked after they somehow managed to lose the third Test after being in control of it for long spells especially after they bowled England out for 67 in the first innings, and then subsequently failing to take several chances to seal the game before Ben Stokes guided England to an unlikely victory.
  • They have used the gap in between Headingley and Old Trafford to play a warm-up match against Derbyshire which was used to give playing time to the other members of their squad, while the likes of Harris, Khawaja and Smith were given the opportunity to spend some much-needed time at the crease.
  • Marcus Harris was one player to take advantage of that match with his fifty and one would expect him to get another chance in this Test, which means Usman Khawaja makes way for returning star man Steve Smith, while the Aussies will have to decide whether to bring Starc or Siddle into the side in place of James Pattinson who is rested for this game.

THE PREDICTION

The Ashes series took another twist at Headingley with England somehow clawing victory from the jaws of defeat but Australia will be wondering how they ever lost that game. They had plenty of opportunities to seal the Ashes but uncharacteristically let them go after dominating for so much of the Test. It will be interesting to see how that match affects both teams psychologically coming into this match. The fact England are unlikely to make changes may actually harm them here as they did ride their luck in that match. Australia know that if they play to a similar level they can win here and with Steve Smith back in their side, they offer good value at Old Trafford.
