South Africa beat Australia by 21 runs

  • South Africa showed some very good signs in their T20 series with England but having won the first match, they were unable to win either of the next two matches although the hosts more than played their part in a brilliant series.
  • Quinton de Kock will again lead the Proteas following his was appointment as permanent captain after Faf du Plessis decided to relinquish the role but the now former skipper will come back into contention for this series.
  • Kagiso Rabada is also back after he was rested for the white ball matches against England whilst there is also a return for Anrich Nortje to provide a major boost to their bowling attack but South Africa will have to make do without Temba Bavuma for this first contest due to a hamstring strain.

  • Australia been dominant in their recent T20 series and they have not dropped a match against India, Sri Lanka or Pakistan in any of their last three with India the last side to beat them in the 20-over format back in November 2018.
  • They have named another strong squad for this three-match series against South Africa with the Australians boasting plenty of options with the ball, so much so that there is no place in the travelling party for Josh Hazlewood, but the absence of Glenn Maxwell is enforced because of injury and is a blow for the tourists.
  • Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott are both rewarded for solid performances in the recent BBL whilst David Warner and Steve Smith will be under pressure to perform with the bat on their first tour back in South Africa following the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.

South Africa were narrowly beaten by England in an incredible T20 series last week and this could be as equally entertaining as they host Australia. Much has been made of the Aussies’ return to South Africa for the first time since they tampered with the ball on their last tour of the country and they are sure to receive a frosty reception. Australia’s best way to respond to that will be to perform but with the hosts preparing for this with a good showing against England and a stronger squad in tow for this series, the Proteas should be able to claim the victory in this first game.
