THE TEAM NEWS

DELHI CAPITALS

  • Delhi Capitals head into this one having already secured their place in the playoffs, although victory here would see them leapfrog Chennai Super Kings into top spot in the 2021 IPL table.
  • All-rounder Marcus Stoinis faces a race against time to be fit having missed Delhi’s last three games, whilst fellow Australian Steve Smith could be afforded another opportunity here with the bat at number three, the position he came in against Mumbai Indians this past Saturday.

CHENNAI SUPER KINGS

  • Chennai Super Kings were beaten comfortably by Rajasthan Royals last time out with their score of 189/4 chased down in 17.3 overs with seven wickets remaining as MS Dhoni’s side showed nowhere near their best, which is perhaps a consequence of them having already secured their playoff place.
  • Experienced West Indian Dwayne Bravo was afforded a rest on Saturday and could be brought back into the side at the expense of Sam Curran, who failed to take a wicket against Rajasthan, with his four overs sent down at an economy rate of 13.75 runs per over.

THE PREDICTION

Chennai Super Kings will not want to go into the playoffs on the back of a poor run of form with a winning mentality crucial, so are expected to put in a far improvement performance here against a fantastic Delhi Capitals side, who contain such a dangerous bowling unit. However, that unit will have to be at their best to deal with Ruturaj Gaikwad, with the Chennai opener off the back of a magnificent unbeaten century against Rajasthan, albeit in a losing effort. Both these two sides boast a quality top three with heavy hitters within their middle order. However, whilst Chennai have the craft and guile of Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur within their arsenal, the Delhi bowlers look narrowly stronger as a group with a brilliant balance of express pace, medium pace and spin. When taking this into account, back Delhi Capitals to win what should be a very tight encounter.
