Reigning County Champions Essex begin their Bob Willis trophy campaign at home to local rivals and fellow County Championship Division One side Kent, who are coming off the back of a successful 2019 season that saw them comfortably retain their top flight status, finishing in fourth place. Essex batsman Tom Westley will contest his first fixture as the club’s new red ball captain, replacing previous incumbent Ryan ten Doeschate.

These two sides contested a two-day drawn friendly earlier in the week with Essex bowler Jamie Porter and Kent batsman Ollie Robinson the two standout players. With Ravi Bopara having left for Sussex, question marks linger over the strength of Essex’s middle-order batting. However, with a typically strong bowling attack, Essex will be expected to win at home where they are unbeaten in red ball cricket since September 2018.
