THE PREDICTION

Despite finishing top of their group, Yorkshire failed to qualify for the Bob Willis Trophy final in 2020, by virtue of having accrued less points than the other two group winners Somerset and Essex. However, head coach Andrew Gale can take plenty of positives from their red ball campaign last year and the ‘White Rose’ look in excellent shape to finish top of Group 3 and mount a County Championship title charge this season. Glamorgan meanwhile, look less threatening having not won a single first-class fixture last year and having lost pace bowler Marchant de Lange to Somerset. Whilst the return of Australian international batsman Marnus Labuschagne is extremely welcome, the Queensland star won’t arrive in time to feature in this match.

On paper this looks an incredibly one-sided matchup. Yorkshire strengthened their bowling in the off-season with the signing of spinner Dom Bess from Somerset set to complement a strong pace attack. Whilst the likes of batsman Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan are away at the IPL, Yorkshire are boosted by the availability of England Test captain Joe Root, who is set do battle with his brother Billy currently plying his trade for Glamorgan as a batsman having accrued 286 runs in red ball cricket last season. With the weather set fair over the four days, any outcome other than a victory for Yorkshire in this contest would be considered a big surprise.
